TOPIC: The Postage Pig!

Welcome to our blog, the first on a variety of topics by a variety of writers! In this one we are, quite unabashedly, asking you for your support! Please read on and we’ll tell you why it’s a good deal for both of us.

The Scripteasers has always been an all-volunteer, service-to-others type of group, and we’ve always operated on a shoestring budget – our annual writing competition prizes and expenses come from member dues and donations in a zero-sum balance. That means whatever money comes in, goes out again in service to the writers community.

We do this because we love to do what we do and what we’ve done for the last 75 years, which is to assist writers, actors, audience members, and any other theatre-friendly folks out there with a step-up to their next level. We also sponsor an annual summer contest, The Script Tease of Short Plays. Uniquely, The Scripteasers has never required contest entry fees and we would like to keep it that way if we can.

These days, we’re incurring more expenses than ever in order to continue to present to you, our audience, including Zoom, website and email expenses. Looking ahead, The Scripteasers would also like to present to live audiences on a regular basis (in addition to Zoom), which also has its own particular challenges and costs as you can well imagine.

So we’re asking you to help fill in the gaps, to kindly complete the circle of giving and make a donation. Or consider a sponsorship.

How much and how often you choose to give is up to you. Back in the times when we met only in person, we had a decorative can that got passed around (we called it the Postage Pig because it was covered in vintage stamps) and folks made whatever donation they were comfortable with. It was not unusual to find a bunch of large bills when un-stuffing the ‘Pig’ at the end of a reading night.

So we’re asking you to do the same, to donate what you can and what you’re comfortable with.

When you think about what it costs for just tickets, parking, and gas to attend theatre in San Diego ($$$$), and that you get the comfort and convenience of Zoom at home for free, it’s one of the great bargains in San Diego to keep The Scripteasers going via donation. We give you over 20 plays each year with discussions and critiques on every one of them!
